Pros +
- The hospitality of the staff; they made the stay so wonderful
- The service was warm and friendly. The food was good and the ingredients were of good quality. The bedding was clean and the room was warm.
- The staff were absolutely fantastic, very welcoming and helpful. The surrounding views were stunning, while being very close to the bus station so very accessible. The Onsen facilities were absolutely superb, and we had the best night's sleep we've had so far in Japan! Very comfortable. And the FOOD! Utterly fantastic. It was an enormous spread of local dishes, and a really wonderful experience for both dinner and breakfast. Definitely worth a stay!
Cons -
- The room and facilities had parts that were really worn down, from chipped teapots, stained curtains to grungy bath sinks, and it made the stay kind of depressing.
- Compared to other Ryokan the cushioning under futons was a less supportive than ideal. Maybe we're not used to hot water, but the indoor public onsen felt too hot to be usable. (outdoor onsen was nice though while still being hot)
- One evening the hot spring water in the onsen was too hot to bathe in, so I had to wait until the following morning to use it. Still, that gave me a chance to try the free public onsen by Hirayu Folk Museum.

Great first Ryokan experience. The food was amazing and the onsens were fantastic, especially the outdoor one! The staff was friendly and for english speakers they had directions translated in English. This was a big plus for us due to us being english speaking travelers who hadn't stayed in a Ryokan before. Overall we would definitely stay here again

For a reasonable and additional charge, the dinner and the breakfast were amazing. One of us was a first time traveller to Japan and the other had previously lived in Japan; both of us thought the meals were interesting, beautiful and presented with care. The room had a great view of the surroundings and nature (covered in snow when we were there) and the amenities were well-functioning and comfortable. The layout of the room (with toilet and sink separated from main room by sliding door) was also pleasing. There are 4 onsens: 2 on the men side and 2 on the women side. There is a 4th private outdoor onsen. We would definitely stay here again.
This is the first onsen accommodation I stayed in, so I have no previous experience, but I thought it was great. The staff was very attentive and made a considerable effort to ensure seamless communication between us, as I only speak some Japanese. The ryokan is only a 5-minute walk from the bus station. The room was a good size and had a big window next to the seating area. The futon was very comfortable and the staff put it in and out for the guest's convenience. Breakfast was good and varied. On top of the usual male/female separated onsen baths, there was also a private rotenburo on the first floor.

Absolutely amazing hospitality and delicious food. Cannot thank Tanaka San enough for being so warm and generous. Would love to come back here again.
I wish there were a no smoking room option but everything was so clean it didn't matter.
The included meals were excellent and the owner was very nice and helpful.
The staff were friendly and nice, creating a very cosy environment.
